Why Train?

Jesus said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.” The need to prepare workers and launch them into the harvest field continues to be one of the greatest needs in missions. Assemblies of God World Missions in Africa has a long history of focusing on the training of national leaders. Our missionaries see leadership training as a key strategy to promote growth and stability in the national church for several reasons. Consider the following:

  • Good training provides a strong biblical foundation for a developing church and stimulates a passion for church planting and evangelism.
  • The task of evangelizing a nation with the gospel will never be accomplished by missionaries alone. Our efforts can be multiplied many times over by mentoring national leaders.
  • National leaders have a unique understanding of their own context and culture that will enhance their effectiveness in ministry.
  • As the church matures, national leaders will participate in mentoring a new generation of ministers.   Again, their unique understanding of their own context and culture will enhance their effectiveness in teaching and mentoring.
  • While a missionary’s term of service is limited, national leaders will carry on the work of the church for years to come. Building the capacity of nationals for leadership and ministry will reap long-term dividends.
  • Christ’s own model for ministry focused on developing workers who would follow him and accomplish “even greater things” in his name.

Training in Namibia

We want to see this legacy of leadership training continue in Namibia. In cooperation with the national church of Namibia, NAMTI (The Namibia Ministry Training Institute) was launched in early 2005. NAMTI is committed to training church planters and evangelists, who will reach their nation for Christ. Working together with our Namibian brothers, the entire missionary team is participating in NAMTI in the areas of teaching, administration, planning and construction. Development of the NAMTI facility and its programs will be ongoing over the next several years.
